In the Beginning, I Had No Idea What I was Getting Into…
In 2012, I went on a business trip to Portland, Oregon. Each day after work, I searched for awesome things to do. Float Therapy came up as one of them. I asked myself…in a river, in the ocean, where? It had many names: float tank, flotation chamber, and sensory deprivation tank. How do I get one of those? How do I get that much Epsom Salt? Will it work for everyone, how does it work, and how long does it last?
What are the Benefits?
I became fascinated with the idea of sensory deprivation after my first float experience. As a psychologist in training, I knew this would be highly beneficial to those dealing with depression, anxiety, PTSD and Insomnia. I began researching the benefits of sensory deprivation. I found additional studies that support float therapy as an effective treatment for physical ailments. These include, but are not limited to chronic pain, Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, brain injuries, cancer, Lupus, Crohn’s Disease, and headaches of all severities. I also found that many professional athletes have been using float therapy to help recover and prepare for future events (MMA, UFC, football, basketball, marathons, triathletes, etc).
Does This Work with Other Healing Modalities?
Absolutely! Many of our clients say that float therapy feels like a nice massage, a chiropractic adjustment, an acupuncture session and an hour with your psychiatrist all wrapped into one! Many doctors send their patients to us before and after surgeries. Doctors have also recommended float therapy to our clients for common illnesses such as high blood pressure, asthma, allergies, emphysema, eczema, and psoriasis to name a few.
Does this help with everything?
Float therapy research as been ongoing for over 60 years. I have been studying sensory deprivation for six years and have hosted well over 50,000 sessions at Healing Waters Float Studio. My research and experience has revealed that float therapy works for everyone and for just about everything. The body and brain are VERY powerful. They need the time and space to shut down and catch up. Float therapy may not be a permanent cure, but it noticeably helps the body and brain heal.
Sensory deprivation not only eliminates light, sound and smell, but it also eliminates gravitational pull on the body and brain. Float therapy enables a state of meditation and healing that you can’t experience anywhere else. You are floating in warm water mixed with a HUGE amount of Epsom salts, both of which have been used for centuries to help in the healing process.
How did floating change my life?
At first, I did not understand how effective float therapy was at healing. I’ve personally dealt with depression and anxiety as far back as I can remember, even as a child. I also have dealt with PTSD and insomnia. Sensory deprivation has given me relief that I could not get anywhere else!
Every day, I see float therapy transform people. If you could just see the difference in my clients before and after their float, you would understand why I am so passionate about this. Many clients insist that this level of healing and meditation has been miraculous for them. Some have left in tears because they are so relieved.
